Of Shoes and Ships: Baby-Faced Confessions

“The time has come," the walrus said, "to talk of many things: Of shoes and ships - and sealing wax - of cabbages and kings”

Some time ago, I posted a quick survey up in my Facebook account where I asked people to be honest and comment their age. At first, I thought that it was just going to be a survey to help me understand my 'online audience' better, but the results I got in response was much more than what I expected.

After revealing that I am actually eighteen years old, a lot of people told me that I didn't look eighteen at all. Some of them said that I look younger, ranging from the age of twelve to fifteen.

I laughed to myself on those comments and messages, thinking: 'Aki, this is what you get for having such a baby face.'

On my side, having a baby face (or a youthful/younger-looking face) can be an advantage. One advantage is that, obviously, I always look younger no matter what I wear. There are times when I try to don a modestly sexy outfit, or a formal one, and I just look like a child who took mommy's clothes.

Come here often?
Having a baby face is very helpful in terms of my chosen hobby, which is cosplay. In animation and games, there are a lot of characters that have that cute round face with chubby cheeks, which I happen to have, making cosplay easier for me. Loli characters, or generally cutesy characters are a breeze.

Of course, having a young-looking face also has disadvantages. For one, even though I am eighteen, the guards and bouncers send me questioning looks whenever I try to enter a bar. I am always demanded to show an ID as evidence that I am of legal age--which can be a pain at times.

Compared to my brother, who is taller and more mature-looking than I am, I am always mistaken as the younger sibling. Sometimes, he thinks I am the younger one as well.

If you agree, I must remind you that you have the right to remain silent.
Regardless of the ups and downs, I do enjoy having a baby face. I like seeing people's reactions when I tell them that I am actually older than I look (and that I am not to be taken lightly).

As to why I have a baby face, I blame genetics. I'm not sure if you have seen my mom in some photos I post online, but she is also older than she looks. Even my dad, and a few distant relatives share the same trait.

For now, I enjoy my face and its overall look. I would not have it any other way and if you have a baby face like I do, embrace it! Some people would kill just to have a younger-looking face like ours. Whether having a baby face is a gift or a curse, it's all on how you use it--and flaunt it!
